LIVE-The White House – President Trump Presents The Congressional Medal of Honor to Staff Sgt. David G. Bellavia – 6/25/2019

President Trump is presenting the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest medal for the U.S. military, to Staff Sgt. David Bellavia, 43, for his actions during the Battle of Fallujah in 2004.

Bellavia will be the first living Medal of Honor recipient for actions in Iraq.

Bellavia is credited with almost single-handedly clearing a house of insurgents while he was with A Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. During the fighting, Bellavia killed some of the insurgents in hand-to-hand combat.

He was originally given a Sliver Star for his actions.

“Hearing two other insurgents screaming from the third story of the building, Sergeant Bellavia put a choke hold on the wounded insurgent to keep him from giving away their position,” his Silver Star citation reads. “The wounded jihadist then bit Sergeant Bellavia on the arm and smacked him in the face with the butt of his AK-47. In the wild scuffle that followed, Sergeant Bellavia took out his knife and slit the Jihadist’s throat.”
